In my extensive 22-year career in the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) sector, I’ve navigated complex dynamics and witnessed stark realities of gender bias and office politics. My experiences reflect the broader challenges women face in male-dominated industries, emphasizing the need for gender equality and a healthier work culture.

Experiencing Gender Inequality in the Workplace I’ve worked for companies acclaimed as equal opportunity employers, yet the reality inside these organizations often told a different story. Gender bias was evident, particularly in pay disparities and promotion opportunities, favoring men over women. This gap wasn’t just a number; it was a reflection of deep-rooted inequality in the workplace.

Encountering Resistance and Biases One notable experience was during an interview with a globally recognized firm. Despite a positive interview process, the feedback was shockingly candid – my gender was a barrier to managing an all-male team. Such blatant gender discrimination highlighted the hurdles women continue to face in climbing the professional ladder.

Politics and Power Plays in Projects Working as a contractor, I observed firsthand the intricate play of office politics. On one occasion, as a junior project manager, I found myself amidst a tug-of-war between consultancies vying for control. The Program Management Office Manager, driven by personal gains, strategically maneuvered to replace contractors with his own personnel. This environment wasn’t just competitive; it was manipulative and counterproductive to project goals.

Overcoming Obstacles and Building Reputation In another instance, I resurrected a failing multi-million-dollar project, only to be undermined by a coordinator with influential connections. These experiences taught me the importance of navigating office politics tactfully and standing firm in my professional capabilities.

Facing the ‘Old Boys Club’ Perhaps the most disheartening experience was being overlooked for a leadership role I was well-qualified for. Despite my proven track record, the position was given to a less experienced male colleague, a classic example of the ‘old boys club’ mentality. This experience, although frustrating, reinforced my resolve to continue advocating for women’s rightful place in leadership roles.

Empowerment Amidst Adversity From these experiences, I’ve learned crucial lessons about resilience and integrity in the workplace:

  1. Understand the Landscape: Quickly gauge the office dynamics and key players influencing the work environment.
  2. Stay True to Yourself: Maintain your integrity and don’t succumb to negative office politics.
  3. Build Alliances: Align with knowledgeable colleagues who can help you navigate the organization’s landscape.
  4. Prioritize Well-Being: If the environment becomes too toxic, prioritize your health and consider other opportunities.
  5. Document Everything: Keep a record of events and decisions for future reference and protection.

Final Thoughts: Advocating for Change My journey in the ICT industry is more than just a career narrative; it’s a call to action for organizational change. We need work environments where women are valued equally, where office politics don’t dictate success, and where each individual’s contribution is respected regardless of gender.

Women in tech, and in all industries, deserve to work in spaces free from bias and manipulation. It’s time for systemic change, and each one of us has a role to play in creating more inclusive and equitable workplaces.©
