In a world where ancient perceptions of marriage and gender roles still echo, it’s time we ask ourselves: Why are these archaic views still shaping our lives? The first recorded marriages, dating back to 2350 B.C. in Mesopotamia, set a precedent that has long influenced societal expectations, especially for women.

Growing up, I often pondered the disparity in the lessons taught to boys and girls. While boys were encouraged to pursue careers and personal achievements, girls were subtly groomed for marriage and homemaking. This age-old narrative, deeply rooted in societal norms, teaches girls to temper their ambitions and aspirations, painting a picture where their success could intimidate or overshadow men.

My personal journey as a single woman often faced scrutiny from family and society. Questions about settling down and starting a family were relentless, echoing the sentiment that a woman’s worth and happiness are intrinsically linked to her marital status. This pressure only magnified the inequality and double standards women face daily.

As a professional in the ICT industry for over two decades, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges of thriving in a male-dominated field. Despite strides towards equality, there’s still an underlying bias against women who dare to excel. The perception that women must conform to a certain standard to fit into male-dominated spaces is a narrative that needs dismantling.

It’s time we question the validity of these dated beliefs. Why should marriage be the ultimate achievement for a woman? Why can’t girls and boys be taught to value both career and personal life equally? The key to progress lies in teaching emotional intelligence and security from a young age, fostering a culture where women support each other rather than compete.

The journey to equality and self-acceptance is long, but it starts with challenging the status quo. It’s about recognizing that being a feminist isn’t about antagonism; it’s about believing in equal opportunities and rights for all genders. We must strive to create a world where women can thrive without fear of judgment or bias, where they are free to make choices that align with their true selves.

So, as you watch the linked video, reflect on the message it conveys. It’s time to step into a new era, one where equality isn’t just a concept, but a lived reality. Dare to be part of this change, dare to challenge, and most importantly, dare to be you. ©
