The main differences between giving advice and coaching people are as follows:
Coaching
Coaching is where you use coaching and questioning models to empower the client to shift their mindset by encouraging the client to see that there are other options that they have not yet thought of that they may want to consider that will help them achieve their outcome. These new options\possibilities help the client to improve the way they think (what they think, why they think it and how they get to thinking that way), develop better strategies that will work for them, and or learn new skills in their pursuit for an outcome.
Through asking the questions in the coaching models and questioning frames the coach is able to quickly assess the gaps in thinking, the clients motives(the big why or the issue impeding progress) and where the client is at with regards to their thoughts, emotions, beliefs and actions to do with an outcome the client is after, but can’t seem to make the shift in mindset that is needed on their own to be able to get the outcome they desire with their current thought processes and strategies they have in place.
Coaching is about listening to and empowering the client to embrace their personal power and resourcefulness to be able to acknowledge and see other options\possibilities the client has been having issues with see on their own. Coaching invites the client into think differently by elicitation of answers that will support his or her intentions to achieve the outcome or goal sought after.
You need more time and skills to be able to coach someone than to merely advise someone on how to solve their problems. In coaching you begin with the assumption that the client can when given the chance tackle his/her gaps in thinking and performing on their own. Coaching empowers the client to take ownership for their thoughts feelings and action to improve their lives.
Coaching is more about questioning than it is using statements to develop the client and solve their problems to transform the client future path and behavior.
The coach will ask the client while standing next them where they want to go and will not give the client direction on or tell the client what direction they should go in or how to get there.
You will need a coach if you are trying to decide between a few different options as a coach will help to draw out the answer that you already have in your head but is disguised in other noise like facts and choices.
You will need a coach it you are trying to figure out what to do next as the coach will help you map out your course and work through barriers and enablers in your journey.
If you are getting frustrated in dealing with difficult people, then you will need a coach to help you identify and appreciate your own styles which will then help you to understand others better.
The definition of coaching as per the Institute of Leadership and Management is “to develop an individual’s performance by unlocking their capabilities through guided conversation and questioning.” Coaching helps the people to find their own answers that distinguishes it from people giving advice through the use of statements.
Coaches see and acknowledge that everyone is unique and that the best solution for you is not necessarily the best solution for me or another person.
Coaching ultimately helps people to achieve the highest degrees of success. Coaching unleashes the power to a person’s potential. This is achieved when a coach helps you to un-muddle and de-clutter your thoughts into a rational strategic action plan. It also will give you inspiration, motivation, and self-confidence to move forward and put into action that plan.
Giving advice
Advice is telling someone to take an action or to do it a certain way consistent with the advice-giver’s map of the world. Advice is a paradigm, opinion, interpretation, assessment, standards and so on and so forth and it delivered through statements that tell the client what to do.
With people that give advice it is generally my way or the highway, right or wrong and this advice is generally given to everyone.
If we are in a new situation that we have never encountered before we may need advice or mentoring.
If you need help sorting through extremely technical issues that need specific areas of knowledge, then it is best to seek advice from someone in that industry on how to solve it
Advice is more one person offer suggestions, hints, tips and pointers what to do and how to do it.
With advice you ask people for their opinions and they give them to you, based on their experience and history on the topic. ©
