In 2007, I faced a reality I never expected. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle, I discovered that cancer doesn’t discriminate. It was a rude awakening when a routine pap smear, which I had been avoiding, revealed CIN1 – a precancerous condition. I had been under the false impression that my health and lifestyle shielded me from such risks.
The subsequent years were a blur of denial and avoidance. I skipped the recommended annual pap smears, convincing myself that everything was fine. However, by 2010, my situation had progressed to CIN2, a more severe precancerous state. The realization hit me during a Contiki tour; amidst the travels, my mind was plagued with ‘what ifs.’
Returning home, I faced the news that my condition had evolved to CIN3, a critical stage where cells may become cancerous. The word ‘cancerous’ echoed in my mind as I grappled with the reality of needing surgery. The experience was overwhelming, magnified by a turbulent personal life and an unsupportive partner.
The day of my surgery was a turning point. Alone and abandoned by my partner, I realized the importance of self-care and self-prioritization. Post-surgery, I endured further challenges. In a desperate attempt to reclaim my space, I moved heavy furniture, which resulted in torn stitches and an infection. This experience taught me the hard way the importance of following medical advice and allowing my body to heal.
This journey was more than a health scare; it was a wake-up call to the importance of regular health check-ups, listening to medical advice, and prioritizing self-care. I learned that no matter how busy life gets, health must never take a backseat.
My message to all women is clear: prioritize your health, attend regular screenings, and listen to your body. Don’t wait for a crisis to start taking care of yourself. As I share in my book ‘Dare To Be You: Break Free from the Shackles of the Past to Become Yourself, Outstanding, and Unstoppable,’ it’s crucial to listen to both your body and your intuition. Your health is your wealth, and it’s never too late to start caring for it.
